The City of San Juan Capistrano was incorporated on April 19, 1961, and will celebrate the 50th anniversary of cityhood in April 2011. The theme is "Centuries of History - 50 years of Cityhood" for the year-long celebration. There will be several events during 2011 to commemorate the anniversary.
The Gavins have created a commemorative design which is now available to order online and will be available at the various events throughout the year (see sanjuancapistrano.org for the calendar of events), including the Swallow's Day Parade Mercado on March 26th.
To capture the theme of the anniversary, the design incorporates "old and new" by using graphics taken from sepia-colored photos of the Los Rios District, Blas Aguilar Adobe, Train Depot and the Mission (where it all began) in the outer corners of the image. The central focus is an interpretive representation of the currrent city of San Juan Capistrano looking down Camino Capistrano with shopping centers and red-roofed buildings popping out amongst the trees. Mission San Juan Capistrano and Mission Basilica are prominent as the most-identified landmarks of our historic city. Though not geographically correct, Santiago and Modjeska peaks (known as Saddleback mountain) have been artistically "slid" over to be featured in the view.
Gavin Arts has partnered with the San Juan Capistrano 50th Anniversary Committee and with the Chamber of Commerce so that each group will earn a percentage of sales.
